Tips and Tricks Automatic Penny Adjustment in EPASS
Jan 05, 2026The production of the United States penny officially came to an end in November 2025. Even though pennies are still in circulation and accepted as legal currency (and will be for a long time yet), the US government has encouraged businesses to help “phase-out” penny use by rounding totals to the nearest nickel. Canadian retailers have been doing this since 2013, when the Canadian penny was eliminated.
While credit card and digital payments should still reflect cent-level pricing, it’s recommended to round all cash transactions up or down to the nearest nickel.
| Total Invoice Amount | Rounding | Cash Payment |
| $1.01 or $1.02 | Round down | $1.00 |
| $1.03 or $1.04 | Round up | $1.05 |
| $1.06 or $1.07 | Round down | $1.05 |
| $1.08 or $1.09 | Round up | $1.10 |
While all this rounding up or down for cash payments sounds like a lot of work, EPASS makes it easy! EPASS has a built-in penny adjustment feature that automatically rounds cash payments to the nearest nickel – no extra work required! You can find complete setup instructions for this feature in our online help.
